Tens of protesters were arrested by police in Istanbul, Turkey, during the protest against rising inflation, which was held on 1 May. Local TVs in Turkey showed images of police fighting protesters in Taksim Square and handcuffing some of them.
Demiroren news agency reported that 30 people have also been arrested in Istanbul's Besiktas district and 22 others in Sisli County.
The Istanbul governor's office said that in total 164 persons have been arrested for “illegal structures”.
Because of Russia's war in Ukraine and global price increases, the annual inflation rate in Turkey in April was 68 percent, Reuters reported, from 61 percent in March.
The head of the Workers' Confederate in Turkey, Ergun Atalay, told protesters in Taksim Square that the minimum wage must change, in order to coincide with price hikes.
