A Communist Party MP in Russia's Far East has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war and withdraw Russian forces from Ukraine.
Breaking the party line on a rare display of opposition to his country's war in Ukraine, Leonid Vasyukevich said on Friday: “We understand that if our country does not stop the military operation, we will have more orphans at our country”, says Skynews, broadcast Klaankosova.tv.
He was speaking at a meeting of the Regional Legal Assembly of Primorsk in the Pacific port of Vladivostok.
Addressing Russian president's comments, his speech appeared in a video posted on a telegram channel.
The speaker of the legislative assembly later issued a statement calling the remarks a “political approval” not supported by the majority of lawmakers.
Earlier this month, a Russian diplomat based in Geneva resigned, saying he was using “turp” for the war. Russia has imposed severe penalties for publicly challenging the Kremlin's power for military operation in Ukraine.
