The number of people forced to flee from conflict, violence, human rights abuses, and persecution has exceeded a staggering 100 million for the first time in history”, United Nations refugee agency U reported. NHCR. This specifically means that more than 1 percent of the world's population has already been forced to abandon homes.
Grandi: This is an alarming signal.
“A hundred million people fled their homes is a very high and alarming number at the same time. It is a record that should never be reached”, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Philippo Grandi said. “This should be an alarm for all, for preventing destructive conflicts, ending persecution, and addressing causes that force innocent people to flee their homes. ”
By the end of 2021, the number of displaced persons worldwide was about 90 million, according to U data NHCR. Conflicts in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo are among the main responsibilities for such a large number of displaced people. The war in Ukraine now increases.
So far, Russia's aggression has forced some eight million people within Ukraine to flee their homes. Over six million refugees from Ukraine have already fled to other countries.
According to UNHCR, over half of all displaced people worldwide have fled their countries. The UN organisation claims that over a year some 53 million people have fled their countries.
Grandi: Only humanitarian aid will not solve the refugee problem
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Grandi specifically underlined “the international response to people fleeing from the war in Ukraine” as “very positive”. So solidarity is very powerful, and we need similar mobilization in terms of other crises in the world.
After all, humanitarian aid is not the solution. “Mbi all is necessary for peace and stability so that innocent people are not forced to choose between acute danger in their country or escape and dangerous exile”, Grandi said. The UN refugee agency will publish its detailed annual report on refugee movements in mid-June.
