Germany's government confirmed it supports Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe.
German MP Knut Abraham said he has asked his executive whether he would support Kosovo's application for membership in this mechanism and that the answer has been positive.
Abraham published a letter where, among other things, the Federal Government of Germany “supports membership of the Republic of Kosovo in the Council of Europe”.
It is important to stay in close co-ordination with our partners in the European Union and at the Council of Europe”, it is said in the letter the deputy Abraham has distributed.

The letter is signed by Andreas Michaelis, who serves as state secretary of Germany's Foreign Ministry.
The Council of Europe is an international human rights organisation, democracy and rule of law in Europe.
The Kosovo government has said earlier that they plan to apply for membership in this mechanism soon.
Kosovo has declared independence in 2008, but has not yet joined several important international organisations.
It is not yet a member of the European Union, nor of the World Trade Organization, nor of the International Organisation of Criminal Police and others.
Serbia has been engaged in the campaign to deter Kosovo, along with its main support in the international arena, Russia.
Kosovo still does not recognise even five European Union countries: Greece, Spain, Romania, Slovakia and Cyprus
Kosovo, however, has managed to join several international organisations among them: The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Olympic Committee, the European Football Federation and the World Football Federation.
