In May, consumer prices in Germany have increased as much as since the early 1970s.
In May of this year, goods and services in Germany cost an average of 7.9 percent more than the same period a year ago. According to reports by the Federal Statistics Ent in April, the inflation rate was still 7.4 per cent. So high had been inflation for the last time in the winter of 1973/1974, when oil prices rose significantly as a result of the first oil crisis.
“Since the start of the war in Ukraine, especially energy prices have increased significantly and have an important impact on the high degree of inflation”, the statistics say.
Compared to the same month last year, energy prices rose by 38.3 percent in May. Food prices also increased by about 11.1 percent. Additionally, because of the coronary pandemic, there are obstacles to the delivery of goods because of the disruption of supply chains, which makes many other goods more expensive.
