In an interview for “Vice of America”, Ambassador Hill stressed that Serbia should be careful to use arguments that it is benefiting anything from Russia's movements.
I don't think Serbia should see Russia in conglomerate with Kosovo, or vice versa, but look at each situation separately. Russia has been so far removed from what we call international dignity, so far from Western values, so if you think Russia will help somehow with Kosovo you have to rethink”, Hill said.
Hill believes that Russia does not protect anyone except President Vladimir Putin.
When asked whether he believes he will ever continue dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Hill has said there are two neighbouring countries that decide that.
According to him, however, the European Union is trying to put various ideas on the table to maintain momentum.
It's not much fun being a mediator, that's what I've done in the past. The negotiations are very difficult and I know that the EU is doing the best it can, these issues are not easy, if they had, they would have been resolved long ago. We need to understand the challenges, but not to be a hostage to her, but to see where we would like to go. We want to be stuck at this time or we want a better life for the people”, he says.
On the other hand, in terms of Serbia's sanctions against Russia due to Russian aggression in Ukraine, Hill has said Serbia should act as European Union member states.
The “The United States is telling Serbia that it is not the question of whether you will go east or West, but there is only one direction and it is up to Serbia to decide how quickly it wants to get there. Finally, it is up to them to decide and nobody is putting pressure on anyone, people in Serbia must decide in which direction they want to go”, he added.
Otherwise, Hill has called it hypothetical, the question of whether there will be consequences in relations between Serbia and America unless sanctions are imposed on Russia.
Whatever we would like is deepening relations with Serbia. We know how important Serbia is in the region and in Europe. The United States now has better relations with the EU because of this terrible war in Ukraine. The point is that we would like better relations, the opportunity to find common interests”.
