The effort comes ahead of Russia's “Victory Day” on 9 May, an annual holiday in Russia celebrating the Soviet Union's victory in World War II.
Russian “Forces in Mariupol have continued their ground attacks on the Azovstal steel plant for the second day, despite Russian statements claiming they will only try to shut it down. Russia's renewed effort to secure Azovstal and complete the capture of Marioupolis is likely to be linked to the upcoming May 9 commemorations of “Victory Dit” and Putin's desire to have a symbolic success in Ukraine”, the ministry's update said.
In addition, it says Ukrainian resistance is continuing at Azovstal, reports the BBC.
This effort has come with the cost of personnel, equipment and ammunition for Russia. While Ukrainian resistance continues at Azovstal, Russian losses will continue to build and prevent their operational plans at the southern Donbasin”, the update is said to be further.
