He made these comments before the informal dinner with the six leaders of the Western Balkan countries, which began from his predecessor, Federica Moghrini, to discuss the future of the region and the main challenges facing it.
The European top diplomat said the issue of security in Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be at the helm of the dinner agenda in Brussels with leaders of the Western Balkans.
“I am talking to them as future members of the European Union, to discuss how we can treat together the consequences of this war. As always, I am eager to hear these leaders' concerns, given this situation, and how they anticipate our joint action to protect rules and values, and how to deal with the negative impact of Putin's struggle on food, energy and stability on our common continent. Because we know Russia is trying to exploit our weaknesses and weaknesses in the region. We must work together not to allow Russia to exploit these weaknesses”, Borrell said.
The European top diplomat said meeting with leaders of Western Balkan countries would be an opportunity for preparation of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting to be held next Monday for the region. He already reiterated that the future of the Western Balkans is within the European Union.
The Western Balkans is part of us, is part of our geography, and we will act together to cope with Russia's divisive actions done directly against the region, through deinformation and cyber attacks... I want to stress the need to stay united and take the necessary steps to ensure together a safe, stable and prosperous Europe. This is our collective interest. This is the best way to build a future for the Western Balkans, because the future of the Western Balkans is within the European Union”, Borrell said.
At the informal dinner, Albania will be represented by Prime Minister Edi Rama, while Kosovo by Foreign Minister Donika Grovalla, as President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti are on US visit.
This time around, Brussels dinner coincides with the difficult situation created by Russian military aggression in Ukraine and has entered the third month.
