Pentagon: Russian aggression can match 1999 NATO intervention

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia in an interview for Voice of America, Serbian-language edition Laura Cooper, has said Russia's unprecedented attack on Ukraine could match with NATO intervention and Yugoslavia's shelling in 1999. Cooper has said what [...]
Cooper has said that what is happening now is an attack on a major power against a democraticly elected government, which also aims to usurp key Ukraine countries and attack civilians and destroy humanitarian aid.
“Aboslutically cannot match. What you see now is that a great power has decided to attack a elected government in a democratic manner and for no reason is trying to usurp important countries of the state by bombing the civilian population and destroying humanitarian aid. Absolutely not the same. I am sure that the people of Serbia can observe the people of Ukraine with their own eyes and understand what kind of destruction they are facing and that they want to support it”, Cooper has said.
Cooper has also spoken of Serbia and the purchase of weapons from Russia from the state leading Aleksandar Vuciq. The US official has said that the consequences are clearly known to those worth military equipment from Russia.
“We have clear consequences for countries around the world who want to buy Russian military equipment. This is the law of CATSA means the opposition of American opponents through sanctions. And this is the statute that we must adhere to. This is not the responsibility of the Secretariat of Defense, but of my colleagues in the State Department. But there are already very clear consequences in terms of sanctions for buying important Russian military equipment. So this is an area where we already have a clear road map”, Cooper said, asking what would be the consequences if Serbia decides to continue military co-operation with Russia.
It is not in Serbia's interest to be a partner of Russia's military that is brutally attacking the civilian population in Ukraine”, Laura Cooper has said, among other things.
While commenting on the war in Ukraine, the Pentagon official has said Russia, despite promises of reduced military activity in some areas, is continuing to attack civilians.
“Moscow is rhetorically changing its strategy, claiming it is pursuing a different goal than what was actually its original goal of overthrowing the government in Kiev. In the field, however, Russia is still using the same destructive tactics against the civilian population. Brave Ukrainian people are resisting the destructive pressure of Russian forces, which are undoubtedly attacking the civilian population. And this is a tactic Russia continues to use,” has said further Cooper.
