The southern town has been at the centre of the worst fighting since the invasion of Ukraine began in February. Azovstal is the largest steel factory in Mariulpol and is one of the largest in Europe, which is currently serving as civilian shelters and Ukrainian forces that seem to be the last fighters in the city.
Control of the strategic city from Russia would help Moscow connect territories in Donbas with the Crimea province, which Russia was annexing in 2014.
