A day after the World Bank has said Ukraine's economy will shrink almost half this year, European bloc top diplomat Josep Borrell has said on April 11th that Russia's bombings and the blocking of ports, making it impossible to transport wheat, is creating shocking waves at a time when the global economy is only facing the consequences of the coronary pandemic.
They're causing shortages. They're bombing Ukrainian cities and they're provoking hunger in the world. They are provoking hunger in our world”, having Borrell to reporters after the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.
Borrell's warnings raise outstanding concerns in the World Bank report, in which economic production in Ukraine is said to shrink by 45 percent and that this decrease will depend on “length and intensity of war”.
Russian subsusion is causing massive impacts on Ukraine's economy and has resulted in major damage to infrastructure”, said Anna Byrde, World Bank Vice President for the Europe and Central Asia region.
Russia started the war in Ukraine on February 24th.
Since then, it has been hit with a host of sanctions from the West, which have isolated it from most of the world, both diplomatic and economic.
The World Bank has said it expects Russia's economy will shrink by 11 per cent this year, as a result of sanctions.
More than 10 million Ukrainians, or a quarter of the population, are believed to have fled their homes, including four million who have completely left Ukraine in search of housing in another country.
