The UN Human Rights Council has overwhelmingly supported a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and establishing an investigative commission to investigate it.
Just another state, Eritrea, in East Africa, voted against the resolution. Meanwhile, 32 voted in favour and 13 abstained.
Before the vote, Ukraine's ambassador said: “is our joint task to ensure accountability by mandated documentation and verification of Russia's crimes and the identification of those responsible”.
Russia has denied targeting civilians in Ukraine, despite widespread images of destroyed residential buildings and reports of the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
Following the vote, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke.
I welcome the establishment of the UN Human Rights Council of the International Investigation Commission to investigate Russian war crimes facts against Ukraine. The evidence will be documented and used in international courts. Russian war criminals will be held accountable”. /
