Turkey, US to Co-ordinate Response to War in Ukraine

Reports between Turkey and the US have been tense in recent years on a range of issues, including Ankara's acquisition of the Russian missile defence system S-400 and policy differences in Syria and the eastern Mediterranean. Washington had imposed sanctions on Ankara in 2020 due to the purchase of the S-400 system.
Turkey shares the maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea and has good reports with the two states. Ankara has described the Russian attack as unacceptable, but has declined to impose sanctions on Moscow.
In the statement following talks between Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal and US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman in Ankara, Turkish Foreign Ministers said allies “have confirmed their support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
“U stressed the importance of being in close co-ordination to manage the multi-pronged impacts of the crisis and to support a diplomatic solution”, said in the statement, and added that the two officials also talked about bilateral reports.
“U confirmed the common will to deepen bilateral co-operation through a stable and institutionalised dialogue and was stressed that despite continued disagreements on certain issues, Turkey and the United States have a broad positive agenda”, it was said in the statement.
In response to the Russian occupation, Turkey has closed for the circulation of the Bosphorus and Dardanele ships that connect the Mediterranean with the Black Sea under the 1936 agreement restricting the circulation of several Russian ships.
However, Ankara has criticised the West for responding to the attack, saying sanctions on Russia should be aimed at stopping the war.
Although there are close reports with Russia in the field of energy, defence and trade, Russia has also sold Kiev's fears, which has angered Moscow. Turkey, whose tourism is highly dependent on Russian tourists, also opposes Moscow's policies in Syria and Libya, but also annexing the Ukrainian Crimea Peninsula. / REL
