The last time the Urzelin volcano threw a saw in Sao Jorge was in 1808, and the Azore Civil Protection requested experts' opinions from the regional centre for monitoring volcano activities, Reuters reports.
Civil Protection added that it contacted the mayor and firefighters, urging them to be on alert and to help the island's inhabitants if necessary.
Seismic activity has begun Saturday afternoon, but local authorities have appealed to the population to remain calm, follow information and recommendations.
Earthquakes ranged from 1.9 to 3.3 on the Richter scale. Some 8,200 people live on the island of São Jorge, one of the nine islands that are part of the Azores.
