Democratic Party of Kosovo Chairman Memli Krasniqi has during his speech at “Women's week”, organised by the American Democratic Institute, has said he is proud that the PDK has given women mostly room in decision-making on the political scene.
Krasniqi said that after the local elections ended, the Democratic Party of Kosovo for the first time has managed to set a new record with women being placed in decision-making positions.
This I proudly say, with pride that in the PDK today five respected ladies of ours lead five municipal assemblies, five local parliaments in Kosovo's highly important municipalities, such as Prizren, Mitrovica, Vushtrria, Gjakova, Skenderaj. Beyond that we have appointed two deputy mayors, including the capital, which happened earlier neither in Pristina nor in Gjilan.”, he said.
Leader of The PDK said commitment is still needed for the position of women in Kosovo society to mark progress to achieve the common objective of policymakers, but, as long as there is an increase in the number of women in decisionmaking beyond the formalisation of participation in structures or on candidate lists, beyond meeting the legal obligations that have quotas, Krasniqi believes are on the right track.
“I want to set the example of the Democratic Party of Kosovo. In past elections we've again been the party that has had the largest number of women candidates for mayors, we've had the largest number, but it's still a small number because it was four candidates, but still in important municipalities and cities. Beyond that, we have also had the largest number of women who have led municipal assembly lists, totaling eight. We have also had about 38 percent candidates on assembly lists. ”, he stressed.
Krasniqi stressed that Woman's Week is a programme that has had direct impact on the empowerment and growth of women's participation in politics, and the PDK is grateful for NDI's engagement in this direction.
