Hill is known to have performed all the formalities of choice in this position, while he has already made public the first messages for the work he expects to do there.
Belgrade Faculty of Political Sciences Dean Dragan Simive says few in Washington know the region better than Hill, and that America, except for former Secretary Lawrence Eagleberger who has served as ambassador to Belgrade (Yugoslavia), had no diplomas in the Serbian capital.
“Sending Hill is the main indicator of the importance that President Joe Biden costs this region and Serbia. Because he sends his personal friend and a man of this format. I mean, after Larry Eagleberger, we didn't have such an ambassador format here in Belgrade. So, only this move shows a lot about how much America cares about developing good relations with Serbia here. And there are other American policy goals in this region known: stabilising relations in B and H and continuing the negotiation process between Belgrade and Pristina. “America wants its strongest and most visible influence in this field, so there are relationships and influences with other major powers that are trying to achieve their own impact”, says Single.
He also mentions and remembers other issues in bilateral relations between the two countries, such as the case of the Bytyci brothers or the burning of the American Embassy in 2008, in response to Kosovo's declaration of independence.
