This is the food that has been eaten for the first time on the moon

According to Business Insider, the first person to enter outer space and eat there was Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin. In 1961 his first meal consisted of a beef and liver pastry from a tube, completed with a sweet chocolate sauce. In 1962, John Glenn became the first American to eat in space. His meal? A similar dish of beef and vegetables, and the sauce of apples outside the pipes, with xylose sugar pills for drinking water.

Safe to say, space food was not designed for language pleasures. The Royal Museum of Greenwich says that astronauts face unique health problems, such as a drop in bone density and muscle mass up to 20 percent during space orbit. Thus, the equipment of appropriate nutrients was of greater importance.

So you would think that the first meal eaten on the moon by Armstrong and Aldrin would be just as unpleasant, with its nourishing value in mind, and it would likely be a soft paste squeezed by a tube. But it turns out that the first meal ever eaten on the moon contained a familiar article that even we common people can connect to: good ham (through Popular Science).

According to Popular Science, Armstrong and Aldrin had over 70 foods to choose from at Apollo 11. On the menu was Canadian ham with apple sauce, as well as ordinary bacon, although squarely shaped instead of fresh strips. The first meal that astronauts were designed to eat on the moon was a meal of peaches, cubes of sugar, coffee, an agrum drink with pineapples and bacon.

Mankind's love for bacon apparently spread into space. According to the page, the ham squares began to appear on space missions since Apollo 7, when three of the four mornings on the rotating menu contained ham. Even the astronaut of Apollo 7, Walt Cunningham, reportedly told Capcom Bill Pogue that “Happiness is a package of bacon on 10th day” Mission member Apollo 8, Jim Lovell, had the same idea of meat: “Happiness is the ham box for breakfast,” he said.

Although the ham is part of the first meal ever eaten on the moon, its popularity decreased massively after Apollo 13. Members of Apollo 15's crew discovered that the ham was salty and dry, even thinking of throwing unspoiled ham stands before turning to Earth. Now, says Popular Science, the ham has long disappeared from space missions and dried sausage pies in the freeze are much preferred than the first.
