China has sailed its aircraft carrier along the sensitive strait that shares with Taiwan, a source told Reuters.
China continues to stress that Tyavni, the democratic island, is part of its territory, and over the past two years has increased its military activity near the island to test its sovereignty, alarming Taipei and Washington.
The source, who was not authorized to talk about the media and who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Shandong carrier sailed near the island of Kinmen, the island controlled by Taiwan, which lies directly in the opposite direction towards the Chinese town of Xiamen.
The Ministry of Defense of China and the American Marines have not responded to the request to comment.
The voyage took place about 12 hours before US President Joe Biden spoke to Chinese President Xi Yingping.
The source described the time of Shandong's movement so close to the call as provocation.
China says Taiwan is the most important and sensitive issue of its relations with the United States. Washington has no formal diplomatic relations with Taipei, but he is Taiwan's most important international supporter and supplier. /Reuters/Periscopi
