Former chief of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Carla del Ponte, has compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to Serbian criminals Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic.
That's until he asked for a warrant as soon as possible.
“Putin is a criminal. The shootout against humanitarian corridors in Ukraine is a crime against humanity”, she said, in an interview for the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
The International Criminal Court has already opened an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine. This will enable Putin's identification of the authors, according to Del Ponte, to be the key.
The first “responsibility is certainly President Putin. And all politicians and military positions of responsibility. The investigation should lead as soon as possible to issuing an international arrest warrant against all indictees, including the head of the Kremlin.
According to her, this does not mean that he will be arrested, “but will find it impossible to leave the country, and that would already be an important sign of negative publicity to him”.
Del Ponte says she is not surprised by the support Putin is receiving from 16 thousand volunteers from Syria, since the Russian president had supported counterpart Bashar al-Assad during the entire conflict in Syria. Many crimes were committed there, but nothing was done to punish the responsible, for which the former prosecutor had resigned from the UN investigative commission.
