Sorrat are engaged in collecting cigarettes thrown out of the streets and squares of a Swedish town as part of a cost reduction initiative for the job.
They carry out the task by taking some food for each cigarette they put in a car designed by a new company in Södertälje, near Stockholm, writes The Guardian.
“They are wild birds volunteering”, said Christian Gunther-Hanssen, founder of the company “Corvi Clearing”, which stands behind this creative approach.
The “Foundation keeps Clean Sweden” says more than one billion spent cigarettes are left on the streets of Sweden every year, making up 62 percent of all waste. The city where the project is being implemented spends 20 million Swedish chrona or about 1.9m euros on road cleaning.
Gunther-Hanssen estimates his method could save at least 75 percent of the cost of collecting cigarettes spent in the city.
Local authorities are initially developing a pilot project before making the potential decision to implement this method throughout the city.
