British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to offer Russia guarantees about NATO's role, because this alliance is protective and any European democracy should be allowed to join, his spokesman said.
Russia, which annexed the Ukrainian Crime Peninsula in 2014, is seeking security guarantees, including the pledge that NATO will never accept Ukraine.
“Russia has expressed concerns over possible NATO aggression, but we have been clear that these concerns are deeply groundless, as NATO is a defence alliance”, Prime Minister Johnson's spokesman said.
But we want to work with Russia and offer diplomatic guarantees to the issue. It is not about making concessions, as the [British Prime Minister Boris Johnson] and other leaders have said all European democracies have the right to join NATO”.
Russia has gathered over 100,000 Russian troops along the border with Ukraine, since the West, as preparations for a possible invasion of Ukraine.
Russia denies that there are plans to invade Ukraine, but has asked NATO and the United States for legal guarantees that the alliance will not accept Kiev as well as expand in the east.
