After the five-hour-long talks, the French president warned that both sides must work quickly to avoid the risk of the transition, writes The Guardian.
For now, tension is increasing, and the risk of destabilization is increasing. Neither Russia nor Europeans want chaos and instability, when nations have already suffered from epidemics (of the Coronobrus). Therefore, we must agree to concrete measures”, Macron said.
On Tuesday, he is expected to visit Ukraine's Kiev, where he will hold talks with Ukrainian counterpart Voldymyr Zelensky. Macron said he plans to inform Putin over the phone about the outcome of the conversation.
It is not clear how Macroni diplomacy will be able to meet Russia's demands that Ukraine's NATO membership be disfellowshipped. However, there were some signs of progress in the conversation. Without coming into detail, Putin said it is possible to consider “a number of proposals and ideas (of Macroni) in order to lay the foundation for our next steps”, he said.
However, he slammed NATO's open-door policy, saying it only benefits the United States. He also warned that Russia could offer asylum to former Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko, who is being charged with treason in his homeland.
