The detainee, a 40-year-old from New Zealand, was arrested after being found at a hotel in downtown Madrid, where he was standing on a false name to evade authorities, police said.
Although the detainee has only been identified by MJP initials, sources have confirmed that he is Michael James Fratt, who is on the FBI's list of most wanted persons.
Information about him and his photo is on the FBI site that has already been updated with information that he has been caught and, according to American authorities, his pornographic websites had generated over $17 million in revenue. The FBI had offered $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
He was arrested in the United States and sentenced to life sentence for child pornography, sexual exploitation, sexual assault and illegal income. But, he managed to escape, and in November 2019, authorities issued an arrest warrant for him.
Spanish police said that longtime American investigators had suspected that he was in Spain, but Spanish authorities had initially concentrated their search for the suspect in Barcelona.
