FBI Director Chris Wray is raising concerns about national security over the TikTok platform, warning Friday that the control of the popular video sharing app is in the hands of a Chinese government “that does not divide our values”. Wray said the FBI was concerned that the Chinese had the ability to control the app recommendation algorithm, “that allows them to manipulate content, and, if they want, use it for impact operations”. He also confirmed that China can use the app to collect data for its users that can be used for traditional spying operations.
All of this is in the hands of a government that does not share our values and that has a mission that is very contrary to what is in the best interest of the United States. This should bother us”, Wray said an audience at Gerald R Public Policy School. Ford of Michigan University.
These concerns are similar to what he raised during congress hearings last month when the issue arose and during a continuing dialogue in Washington about the app.
TickTok is owned by the Beijing-based ByteDance company.
But at a Senate hearing session in September, TikTok Chief Operative Vanessa Pappas answered the questions of members of both parties, saying the company protects all American users' data and that Chinese government officials have no access to them.
“
Concerned about China's influence on TikTok, the Trump administration in 2020 threatened to ban the app within the US and pressured the ByteDance company to sell the TikTok platform to an American company. American officials and the company are now in talks on a possible deal that would solve American security concerns, a process that Mr. Wray said was taking place in US government agencies.
