October 13th sparking Kosovo visa hopes

With a positive mood that Kosovo will receive visa liberalisation in two weeks, a group of MPs who remained in Brussels have returned to Kosovo. MPs from the two parliamentary commissions -- the one for foreign affairs and the Commission for European Integration for four days -- met the various eurodeputs of the European Union member states.

They were asked to move in their positions and give positive visa assessment at the European Union Council meeting on 13 October.

But despite this with MPs from a state of importance, they did not meet.

“With the Netherlands eurodeputs we have not met but we have met with other Eurodeputs and we have received positive answers, the Netherlands is still skeptical about this and I hope this process will end successfully because it is a major injustice being done to our country. We hope 13 is over. All the deputies we've met have said we owe you since 2018 after you've met all criteria”, LDK deputy Rzazarta Krasniqi said.

“S have at least told us that they will not prevent this process, sometimes even the abstention in the vote is a kind of help. The Eurodeputs have told us that some countries are reluctant separately and depending on what response they will give”, AAK deputy Time Kadriy said.

France and the Netherlands have been two states with attitudes against visa liberalisation for Kosovo.

While France has changed its stance, it is not clear whether the Netherlands is for free movement for Kosovars.

The foreign minister of this state has said they would later take a stand.

The progress in the past in fighting organised crime and corruption is key to us. Only after assessing the progress made and after a discussion with Parliament will we have a position on the issue”, the Dutch MPJ's response is said.

The Czech presidency of the European Union has also formally put the visa liberalisation discussion on the agenda for Kosovo, where, according to the plan it has presented, the visa issue will be discussed on 13 October.

Since 2016, the European Commission has estimated that Kosovo has met the official criteria for visa liberalisation, but other conditions were imposed along the way, such as ratification of demarcation with Montenegro.
