An American traveler was trying to smuggle the 1m-long albin alligator out of Germany on a flight to Singapore before being caught by staff.
The puzzled luggage inspectors discovered the rare white alligator involved in a narrow suitcase at Munich International Airport, Bavari, last month.
The creature was found wrapped in just a small hole so it could breathe through the nostrils.
A criminal case was opened against 42-year-old traveler for violations of the laws for the welfare of animals, and the alligator was captured and sent to a reptile shelter in Munich.
Consumers reportedly pay up to 75 thousand euros for white alligators in Asia, German media report.
