During the past week, animals obtained a water tank, leaving villagers and crops bad for them, the broadcaster CCTV said, records Periscopi.
It is not known why Asian wild elephants, a protected species in China, fled the national reserve in the province of Yunnan.
Since April, however, these animals have traveled a distance of 300 miles [500 km], followed closely by residents and authorities, with hundreds of people mobilized to ensure the public safety of citizens.
On Tuesday, authorities in Yunnan said the herd was 20 kilometers from the capital, Kunming, a city of millions.
Since mid - April, elephants have destroyed 56 acres [56 ha] of crops, causing loss of over $1 million.
So far, no victims have been reported, with local residents trying to run these animals with food and close roads with trucks.
The population of wild elephants in Yunnan is about 300, while in the 1980s it was 193. /Periscope
