The “Ide is to distribute up to 150,000 doses among our neighbouring countries in the Western Balkans,” told reporters, adding that official Sofia had received requests from Northern Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Reuters reports.
The minister also stated that an answer from the European Commission should arrive tomorrow on how exactly Bulgaria should act and whether it can donate or sell doses. He added that Bulgaria wants to donate mainly AstraZeneca vaccines.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said last week that Sofia plans to donate significant amounts of vaccines to northern Macedonia, recalls Reuters, which the agency estimates could help improve strained relations between the two countries, which were marred by Bulgaria's veto in northern Macedonia's EU accession talks.
Bulgaria has the lowest levels of vaccines in the EU, but Katsalov says his country has agreed on 13 to 14 million doses under a European scheme to distribute vaccines by the end of the year and can afford to help other countries.
