This comment by Putin was made during a video conference Wednesday with Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, the BBC writes.
The conference was held after the country's health officials established a new dose of Sputnik V vaccine called Sputnik Light.
Putin's comparison referred to the Soviet-era weapon that remains widely known and used today.
The Sputnik V vaccine functions in a way similar to others developed by Oxford like AstraZeneca and Janssen, Johnson & Johnson.
Sputnik uses a cold - type virus designed to be harmless, as a host to give a small fragment of the coronary into the body.
Administration critics Putin were skeptical when the vaccine was given quick regulatory approval in Moscow last year, but evidence of the late phase has found it offers high protection levels against COVID-19.
