Erdogan accused him of punching the failed state in 2016.
Anatolia news agency reported that agents of the National Intelligence Organisation arrested Selahaddin Gulen and sent him back to Turkey.
It's not stated where the arrest took place. Anatolia, which published a photo of the suspect in handcuffs, also did not report whether the operation was conducted in co-operation with the location Gulen was arrested.
Fethullah Gulen, who lives in the United States, is at the helm of a nongovernmental organization and company, and since 2016 he has denied that he was involved in the coup effort.
Erdogan believes Gulen is leading a terrorist organisation in order to bring down the Turkish government.
Several tens of thousands of people have been arrested, and more than 140,000 have been fired or suspended from their duties since the failed coup.
