Organised crime prosecution body, DICOT, on Thursday 20 May, announced the capture at the Black Sea port of Constanta's shipment of 1.4 tonnes of heroin.
Officials called the second largest drug transport on EU territory in recent years.
Illegal cargo was discovered on May 10th hidden in containers carrying construction materials to an anchored ship in Constance that was sailing from Iran to Romania in several Western European countries as destinations.
Our country remains a transit point for such quantities,” said prosecutor Oana Patu from the Romanian news portal Hotnea.ro.
Romanian police estimated the shipment was worth 45m euros.
Europol, the US drug enforcement administration and law enforcement agencies from Hungary, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and France all participated in the operation, which included raids on eight countries in Romania and abroad and led to the dismantling of a drug trafficking union made up of Romanian citizens and foreign citizens, Oranews writes.
The number of suspects arrested has not yet been revealed by Romanian authorities.
