Fajon: Protection and cloning of war criminals in Serbia should be tolerated

Commenting on the tensions caused by the mural dedicated to criminal Ratko Mladic, European Parliament MP Tanja Fajon told “Noova” that Serbia should condemn the deglorification of war criminals and that any protection of such people is unacceptable in countries that are candidates for EU membership. Since 9 November [...]
Since November 9th, when some activists in Belgrade tried to destroy Ratko Mladic's own wall on their own, tensions remained heated in the centre of Serbia's capital every day. Two protest rallies were organised, initially because of the arrest of activists and then because of the authorities' refusal to remove the wall dedicated to The Hague convicts. In parallel with protests by civic activists, members of the right-wing groups organised almost every day some rallying in support of the war criminal.
All of this has been the reason for the reaction of European Parliament deputies, who in their statement have condemned Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, saying it is unacceptable that police defend a wall of war crimes convict in a country that is a candidate for EU membership.
“Maral protection is another example of what the Government of Serbia and President Vuciq think of reconciliation, rule of law, democracy and regional co-operation. Once again, Serbian authorities and top Serbian political officials have openly shown they do not respect international justice and its decisions, as well as the victims of wars. It is totally unacceptable for a candidate country for EU membership to deploy its police to protect the morale of a convicted war criminal”, the statement said.
Although it is not among the signatories of the declaration, former European Parliament rapporteur for Kosovo Tanja Fajon told “Novan” that it fully agrees with its contents.
I'm familiar with the letter sent and signed by my colleagues and I agree with its contents. Any kind of protection or legalisation of war criminals who have been convicted of their inhuman acts is absolutely unacceptable and should not be tolerated. These include recent events in Serbia, a country that is on its way to membership”, Fajon said.
She adds that Serbia must focus above all on achieving reconciliation, promoting peace and stability, and protecting democracy.
This is what the people of Serbia deserve. Therefore, I urge authorities to strongly condemn any attempts at destabilising and reviewing the terrible and bloody past”, Fajon concluded.
