The situation in the Capitol and around it is still tense, while protesters clashed with police guarding the building.
According to Reuters news agency, some people punched the doors of the main hall where congress Senates were held in an effort to get inside.
Lawmakers interrupted sessions that opened in the afternoon for the certificate of electoral votes and are being extended due to objections from some republican lawmakers.
Protesters have reportedly spread throughout the Capitol building. Police are escorting members of Congress outside the building for security reasons.
Also reported is that Vice President Mike Pence has been escorted to a safe place within the Capitol.
According to some reports, there have been gunshots within the Capitol.
