Residents of the village of Rakita in southeast Serbia have removed the deployed pipes of a new hydropower plant in a river near their settlement. Local residents who were helped by environmental activists fear that installation may destroy fish reserves in the Rakitska River, causing wells and livestock to dry up without water, reports the report. Euronews.
There are some people living nearby, they have livestock, they have gardens, the river means a lot to them”, added another man. And then some investors came and swept the river away. They have no right to do that. ”
About 100 small hydropower plants are built in Serbia, according to the Environment Ministry.
Hydro power plants argue that environmental impact is known, but point to much greater damage caused by the generation of coal energy. They say Serbia should make a choice.
