The two directors of a Chinese bank took disciplinary action after one of them slapped and insulted a young worker who refused to toast to the boss.
The Bank Semen International issued a statement today saying the incident occurred last Thursday, when a worker named Yang went to a restaurant in Beijing with his post-work colleagues, reports “South China Morning Post”
Young reportedly refused to take a toast to the chief of the branch, a man named Luo, struck him as the other manager verbally insulted him.
The bank said it became aware of the incident after Yang posted to social media what happened at the restaurant.
His post attracted the attention of a large number of Internet users who highlighted the problem of the hierarchical culture of working in China and the role of alcohol - drinking dinners.
The bank's human resources department said both managers would receive a serious warning and that Dong would have the bonus issued six months of pay, while Luo would receive a similar sentence, but only for three months.
The bank apologized to Yang. He said in the social media he hasn't tasted alcohol for 10 years.
After a while, when everyone was a little drunk, one of the bosses approached me and struck me in the face and insulted me with words. He asked me if I was stupid because I didn't drink when the boss made a toast,” said Yang.
He added further that some colleagues also criticised him when he decided to leave.
For a new employee like me, this has ruined all good feelings about the financial industry,” said Yang.
