A study published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene says that about 5,800 people were admitted to the hospital as a result of false information in social media, reports the BBC.
Many died from drinking metallol or alcohol - based cleaning products.
They wrongly believed that products were a cure for the virus.
The World Health Organization (OBSH) said earlier that false news about COVID-19 is spreading as fast as the virus itself, with conspiracy theories, gossip and cultural stigma, all contributing to death and injury.
