On Thursday afternoon, leaders of the ruling coalition parties in Kosovo will gather to discuss its functioning after the recent quake following the resumption of talks with Serbia, mediated by the European Union.

Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti has faced specific criticism from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, due to the way the negotiation leadership is led and the members of the negotiations are put to the fore, while emphasis has been placed on the need to avoid any process where the United States is not involved.

Kosovo and Serbia are expected to meet on September 2nd at the White House, where, as Council for National Security spokeswoman Grayson Vincent told the Voice of America via E-mail, “National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien will be host to the meeting of Kosovo's leaders and Serbia, along with Ambassador (Richard Grenelli).

The United States is looking forward to these important discussions with Serbian President (Aleksander) Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister (Avdullah) Hoti. The United States believes progress in economic issues is the key to advancing the peace process”, it said.

The meeting at the White House was originally scheduled for 27 June, but plans failed because Kosovo's Special Prosecutorship in The Hague published the announcement of the establishment of still unconfirmed charges against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and Democratic Party Chairman Kadri Veselin as suspects of crimes against humanity and war crimes. Mr. Greenell said afterwards that the meeting would take place on a future date.

Analysts in Kosovo, meanwhile, say reports of the September 2nd meeting find the country with a lack of internal unity, which, according to them, risks seriously undermining Kosovo's position in the negotiations process.

The meeting at the White House will be held several days before the European Union-brokered meeting in Brussels on 7 September to continue talks resumed on 16 July.

The ruling coalition in Kosovo, which was approved in parliament on 3 June, is deemed fragile because of low votes, and the situation in the country has prompted discussions on the possibility of its enlargement, which would ensure a broader consensus even in the face of talks.
