On August 10th 1998, Bekim Berisha, known as “Abeja” as one of the Kosovo Liberation Army fighters, fell heroicly after a several-hour fight with Serbian forces.
Bekim Berisha was born on June 15, 1966, in the village of Graboc, Pec. Witness's grandfather, Necip Selmani, had fought against Serb invaders for years
Parents Fazli and Fahrije Berisha had six children - five sons and one daughter - while Bekim was the sixth child in a row. Bekim Berisha conducted primary school in Gorazdevc, Peja, and the high art school in Pec.
Adult and well-educated by grandfather and father, who lovingly cultivated national feelings in the tender spirit of future Kosovo freedom fighter Bekim Berisha, in his inability to continue his studies, was forced to abandon Kosovo. The first station for the new exile from Peja's Graboc was Croatia.
At first, he worked as a laborer. He took on heavy physical work, in order to ensure his existence, only to help his family and register at the University of Hotelry in Opatis and Veterinary School in Zagreb, the Kosovo Press broadcasts.
Both schools were successfully completed. While in Croatia, Bekim Berisha learned six foreign languages, so he was able to read various, economic, tourist, and military literature.
At this time, early in Croatia and later in Bosnia, the war of Croats and Bosniaks against the Serb colonial regime erupted. Even though by profession from the field of tourism and veterina, Bekim Berisha willingly responded to the invitation to fight against this regime. At this time Bekim Berisha lived in the Netherlands, but left Western life and was ranked alongside Croatian elite units, respectively.
As a fighter and strategist in the fight against Serbs in Croatia, Croatian Army General Staff decorated Bekim Berisha with the general's rank. From Croatia's war, Bekim Berisha faces Bosnian war again against Serb forces, participating in many fierce battles.
The post-war situation in Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia clearly showed that the day when war would begin in Kosovo was not distant. So Bekim Berisha in early March 1998 with a group of immigrant friends illegally enters Kosovo, settling in the ranks of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
At first, it was arranged in Achareva in Drenica. Here began the first arrangement with young soldiers for martial arts instruction. On April 22, 1998, in Achareva Bekim Berisha with other KLA fighters raised the Albanian flag and opened the Military Academy. But at this time fighting between Serb forces and KLA forces became very tough in the Dukagjin Operative Zone. Bekim Berisha along with witness Bedri Shala went to Glodjan in Decani, thus becoming the strong arm of Commander Ramush Haradinaj and Dukagjin fighters. This is Bekim Berisha showing skill in the military preparation of young soldiers, and especially in carrying, providing, and gathering weapons.
The Warrior of KLA Bekim Berisha, in the Battle of Yunik on May 29, 1998, committed himself to protecting this area, which had a special strategic significance, making the maximum contribution to protecting this village from falling into the hands of Serb forces that had been surrounded by a large military and human arsenal. And just the fall of Bekim Berisha in the field of honor, along with the brave Bedri Shala, Elton Zherka, Permet Vulen, Union Lek etc. led Yunik into the hands of Serb forces. It was this day of August 10, 1998, when Bekim Berisha falls from a ball, entering the eternity of war for the liberation of Kosovo by Serbian forces.
For Bekim Berisha's merit and heroism in the fight against the fierce Serbian regime that ruled nearly a century in Kosovo, the KPC General Staff, after the war ended, promoted him to the general rank. Bekim Berisha was first buried in Enik. Later, there was exhumation in his homeland, where he was set up as a lpidar shining mare and a path of confession for future generations.
While historians believe that the domain of the individual's activity narrows the interest area of the historian, branding figures such as Bekim Berisha's figure are a big responsibility for any historical feather that will handle this picture.
“Serbs do not want diplomacy just war”, he said in one of the series of rare videos the AP published and where Berisha speaks during the war.
It later says in another statement that Serbs do not understand dialogue, but only relations “for fire”.
