In a communique released to the media by NATO, Kosovo reportedly entered a new phase of peace and development after 12 June.
In the early hours of June 12, 1999, contingents from many states entered Kosovo under KFOR's mark and launched the NATO-led mission, which today marks the 21st anniversary.
Kosovo entered a new period of peace and development, also thanks to KFOR's contribution to safe and secure environment, as well as freedom of movement for all citizens in Kosovo, regardless of their ethnic affiliation”, the report said.
It is also said that restoring the security situation in Kosovo has caused the number of KFOR troops to drop from 55 thousand troops in 1999 to only 3 thousand and 500 now.
“The dramatic improvement of security on the ground has led to the progressive reduction of KFOR from 55,000 troops in 1999 to about 3,500 troops now.
Soldiers from twenty-seven states under the command of Italian Major General Michele Ries constitute a strong, reliable and preventative force that manifests the same spirit, commitment and enthusiasm as their predecessors”, the communique adds.
KFOR's mission remains unchanged, while KFOR remains a necessary factor of stabilisation for Kosovo's future and regional security.
“I strongly believe that the stable situation from the security perspective is the necessary condition for dialogue and co-operation. KFOR will continue to make its contribution to overcome the situation towards a brighter future for the younger generations of Kosovo”, General Reese has declared in the case of KFOR's anniversary.
