According to an initial reconstruction of the events, the ship was carrying 53 people, most of whom were sub-Saharan Africans, who had left the town of Sfax in Tunisia to go to Italy.
This shipwreck occurred between June 4th and 5th in the Kerkennah Islands, the investigators said, while authorities were notified by a fisherman who had seen the drowning troops, writes The Guardian, translates Periscope.
Officials in Sfaks said that of the 35 dead bodies that had been found, 22 had been women and one of them pregnant.
At least three children between the ages of 3 and 4 were also dead.
According to the UN refugee agency, efforts to reach the Italian coast from Tunisia had increased by 150 percent in the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2019.
More than 80 people who have tried to reach Europe died in July 2019 after their boat was flooded outside the port of Zarzis. /Periscope
