The Media Institute in Kosovo has today sent letters to incumbent Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Finance Minister Bislim Bislimli and the Independent Kosovo Media Commission.
In it are the requests submitted at the press conference of 1.4 2020, which are required to help the media in Kosovo following the serious situation that has caused Covid-19.
” SERCH
Honored Prime Minister
The Kosovo Media Institute is a representative institution of Kosovo's media industry.
On behalf of Kosovo's licensed Radio and Television, we ask the Government of Kosovo to support Kosovo media under the special fund for businesses and employees, because their functioning is closely linked to Kosovo's economic development.
The media in Kosovo live by marketing, and at this time when we are facing the Corona Virus, companies have already interrupted their advertising in the media. Consequently, the media (but RTK, which is financed from the state budget), during the month Mars has not accomplished nearly any entry.
In Kosovo there are 170 audio-visual media licensed by Kosovo's Independent Media Commission, a large portion of the eye is in danger of closing and their workers leaving work.
As you know, Kosovo media workers have not interrupted their work one day, and media owners have increased spending even more, thus creating numerous debts.
It has to be taken into account that half of the media are private companies and half NGOs.
The media that function as NGOs can't legally even borrow, so they are threatened with immigrant closure.
The month June is the deadline for paying the annual license tax, the means that go to the state budget.
We're looking for the government that:
1. To instruct the Independent Media Commission to lift this year's license tax.
2. Consider journalists and other media workers as first line category against COVID-19, like doctors and policemen.
3. To help financially owners of licensed media, to cover their expenses for workers' salaries and other expenses, from declaring the emergency situation until it lasts.
Respectfully
Kosovo Media Institute Board Chairman
Fazli Veliu”
