Trump spoke to reporters at the White House on March 6th, days after the United States signed an agreement with the Taliban, with the aim of ending the 18-year war in Afghanistan. Asked whether an American eventual withdrawal from Afghanistan could result in the overthrow of the current government by the Taliban, the president has said that “this should not happen, but it could happen”.

The United States and the Taliban have signed an agreement on February 29th in Doha that allows Western forces to leave this state within 14 months in exchange for implementing obligations by the Taliban, including negotiations with the Afghan government. However, Afghan President Ashraf Ghan has warned that he is not ready to implement a clause of agreement, envisioning the release of 5,000 imprisoned Taliban.
