Thousands of face masks sent by China for Italy's busy hospitals have ended up in the Czech Republic. Such a mistake has occurred, while Europe, now the epidex of Coronourius' pandemic, faces a lack of masks.
The problem is essential in Italy, the country that is currently paying the highest price, with nearly 5,000 deaths and its hospitals at the coughing point.
But the Czech Republic, which is also preparing for an increase in infections, has strengthened controls on export and distribution of such material.
According to foreign media, Telegrafi conveys, it was unclear on Sunday whether the incident was a misunderstanding, a logistics mistake, or a deliberate attempt to wear masks.
The Italian daily La Repubblica wrote on Saturday that Czech authorities seized Chinese masks destined for Italy's hospitals under the guise of a war claim against traffickers, in an article titled: “As the Czech Republic seized thousands of masks sent from China to Italy”.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Jan Hamask, admitted on Twitter that “unfortunately, following further investigations, turned out that a smaller part of a cargo seizure was a Chinese donation to Italy”.
According to Czech media, the donation from China represented just over 100,000 masks.
However, no Italian official had reacted to the La Repubblica article until Sunday.
