Justice in Iran sentenced one person to death, while two others to long prison terms after, as it said, they were spying on the Central Intelligence Agency in the United States CIA. Iran's Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty for Amir Rahimpour, who has been spying and trying to pass information about Iran's US nuclear programme, said Iran judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili.
He added that the sentence will be executed soon. Esmail gave no details about exactly what Rahimpour is accused of, nor about his age or background. The CIA hasn't made any statements yet.
Two other people working for a charity were sentenced to 15 years in prison, on charges of spying on the CIA and operating against Iran's national security, Esmail also said. Their names were not made public. Iran has previously condemned suspected spies for the US and Israel. Shahram Amir is the last suspected spy to have hung in August 2016. / REL
