As the Voice of America reports, from Iran to Hong Kong, from Ukraine to Libya, security challenges are numerous and these conflicts occur in conditions of corruption and global climate emergency.
The United States is sending a large delegation to Munich, including Defence Secretary Mark Esper and Secretary of State Mike Pompeii, a signal that Washington wants to reject allegations that it is withdrawing from engagement, says analyst Elisabeth Braw of the Royal United Service Institute.
The United States is currently launching the largest American military exercise in Europe for a quarter of a century. We should keep that in mind when we talk about the distance of the United States from Europe”, she says.
Washington's biggest clash in Munich is likely to be with Iran after the United States killed Iranian General Qassem Solejman earlier this year, followed by Iranian strikes on military bases in retaliation, which culminated in the accident crash of Ukrainian aircraft by the Iranian military.
But the chairman of the conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, hopes the conference will offer a chance for the nuclear agreement with Iran.
“in order to maintain it through negotiations on ballistic systems, regional security architecture, the fight against terrorism. Can Iran stop supporting Hezbollah? Questions like this”, says Mr. Ischinger.
Soliman's murder in Iraqi territory resulted in Baghdad's reaction and a vote in the Iraqi parliament to expel 5,000 American troops in the country.
NATO is discussing the possibility of taking over the training mission of Iraqi forces struggling with the Islamic State, which has been welcomed by Defence Secretary Mark Esper, who spoke to reporters during his trip to Europe.
“If NATO can compensate for the American presence, allow us in time to return some of the”, he said.
The conflict in Syria continues to destabilise the Middle East region, and Ankara is warning revenge against Damascus for the death of Turkish soldiers in the clashes this week.
War in Libya is also at the top of the European agenda.
There are hopes that peace talks may be advancing in Afghanistan, with reports that the United States and the Taliban may be close to an agreement.
China's foreign minister will take part in the conference amid the alarm for Coronavirus, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and American efforts to block Chinese firm Huawei.
Meanwhile, Russia's support for rebel forces in eastern Ukraine continues to exacerbate tensions with Europe. France has recently called for reagency with Moscow.
Many Central and Eastern European countries would be concerned”, says Mrs. Braw.
As global tensions mount, leaders from around the world will gather at a hotel in the center of Munich for three days of intense debate.
