This man had been arrested in the Libyan town of Derna in late 2018 and had been extradited to Egypt by authorities loyal to General Khalifa Haftar in May of last year.
Al-Ashmawy was found guilty of several counts, including planning an attack in 2014, when 22 military guards were killed, and involvement in plans to kill the former interior minister in 2013.
He was the leader of the “Bay al-Maqdis” group, which is known in Egypt as the most active group, while in 2014 he had come out in support of the so-called Islamic States.
Even 36 other convicts were sentenced to death after being convicted of terrorism, writes “Reuters”, Report Express.
The decision will first be sent to the Grand Mufti to give the opinion before the convicts are executed.
Al-Ashmawi was previously condemned in absentia with the same sentence.
