Borrell with socialist conviction, is known as an opponent of the Catalan separatism and supporter of Spain's unity, China reports.
However, former Spanish Foreign Minister in an interview RTS has said it should forget the position it had in a state that does not recognise Kosovo and defend its European position.
I was Spain's Foreign Minister, a country that did not recognise Kosovo's independence for its reasons. I am no longer the head of Spanish diplomacy and have a responsibility to Europe and have to forget my country's position and defend my European position. Let's try our best to facilitate dialogue. I'll work for him. People need to understand that when you work at a European level, you cannot monitor your country's” position.
He has also said Serbia and Kosovo's path towards the EU would be jeopardised if the two sides do not sit down to dialogue. Borrell added that in this direction all should be contributed, including the US.
“We need to start dialogue and it is up to the European Union to help in this direction. I think we should be active. If nothing has been done, the problem will remain unresolved and Serbia and Kosovo's path towards the European Union will be jeopardised. I know that in recent months, tensions have increased between the two sides when it comes to tariffs and diplomatic activity. We need to lower tension, to return to a situation where dialogue is possible. For us in the European Union is an investment, we are not doing it for ourselves, but for reconciliation and peace. We would like this to happen in the Western Balkans”.
As for US mediation through Donald Trump's Emissar, Richard Green, the EU representative said co-operation is needed to achieve results. However, he went against American President Donald Trump's opinion that the economy is everything.
We don't compete with the United States. I think the economy is everything to President Trump, but politics is extremely important. This is not an economic problem, but also from an economic perspective, the European Union has invested much money in both Serbia and Kosovo, much more than the United States. We'll keep doing this and help him. We don't compete with them”.
All must contribute to the dialogue process and one day can be normal relations among people in the Western Balkans, as is today in the European Union, where borders are invisible. It may be a good idea to have a special envoy for Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, someone who knows the region well, who is an experienced diplomat, who has my faith and strong skills, because this is a problem that needs to be addressed on a daily basis and not occasionally for someone to come from Berlin and Brussels to say something. He must be fully committed to this until the” agreement is reached.
