Comments come at a time when the US Department of Justice is facing sharp criticism for handling a case involving Roger Stotte the president's convicted former adviser.
The attorney general is accused of bowing to presidential pressure.
Barr's comments are now a rare sign of confrontation with the president.
“I think it's time to stop posting on Twitter for the criminal cases of the Justice Department”, Barr told ABC News.
“I can't do my job here in the department with constant comments that underestimate my”, Barr said, follows.
Republican majority leader in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, said the president should listen to the prosecutor Barr's advice.
There was anger in the United States this week when the Department of Justice said it plans to reduce the time of the prison sentence he will be looking for for for Stone a friend of the president.
Stone was convicted in November of obstructing investigations the House of Representatives conducted about Russia's intervention in the US elections in 2016.
