Pope Francis called on the United States and Iran to avoid escalation of the situation, as well as to follow the path of “dialog and self-control” to prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East.
He said tensions jeopardised “to compromise the gradual reconstruction process in Iraq, as well as to lay the groundwork for a major conflict”.
The pope made his call during an annual speech to ambassadors accredited in the Vatican.
The particularly disturbing “are the signals coming from around the region, following the rise of tensions between Iran and the United States”, Pope Francescu told diplomats from more than 180 states.
The 83-year-old leader of the Catholic Church during his speech made a largely grim collection of 2019, talking about wars, global warming, xenophobia to migrants and the danger of nuclear weapons.

United States President Donald Trump, in a speech to the nation, said that as long as he is president of the United States, Iran will never have nuclear weapons.
Our American forces are prepared for everything. But Iran seems to be pulling back”, he has declared.
