The case occurred on the A1 Highway, which connects Milan and Naples, about 20 miles [20 km] from Milan late on Tuesday, the ANSA news agency reports today.
An armored vehicle crashed into two trucks set up by thieves to block the road, but the driver managed to get out and stop at a nearby gas station, where he found a police patrol vehicle.
The highway was closed for several hours so authorities could clear the street. Normal traffic resumed around 9 a.m.
The truck company Battistoll said no one was hurt, reports the ANSA.
A similar but unsuccessful attack took place on the same highway in 2014, the Kosovo Press broadcast.
